"Ulead - PhotoExpress (My Scrapbook Edition) 4.0- March 2002

PhotoExpress - My Scrapbook Edition is a new computer program designed to allow you to scan and work with your photos with the ultimate aim of producing computer generated scrapbook pages.

Once installed, the work screen looks very much like Windows Explorer, so will be familiar to many people. A menu gives the options of: Browse, Photo, Project.

Browse allows you to:

  • Load photos from a variety of sources including a scanner, a digital camera or a video file.
  • To adjust your photos once you have them in the program (rotate, convert or enhance.
  • Print your photos in a variety of formats - to thumbnails, cd covers, poster, t-shirt etc
  • Share your photos by email, the web or other means
  • Download updates for the program

Photo allows you to:

  • Load photos from a variety of sources including a scanner, a digital camera or a video file.
  • Edit your photos:
    • Adjust the brightness, resize, trim, focus etc
    • Select parts of the picture.
    • Remove red-eye from photos
  • Add text
  • Decorate photos, pages etc

Project allows you to:

  • Make scrapbooks
  • Make frames for photos etc
  • Stationary - cd covers, letterhead, gift tags, note pads, calendars etc
  • 3D folding - a variety of decorative boxes.
  • Edit your photos:
    • Adjust the brightness, resize, trim, focus etc
    • Select parts of the picture.
  • Add text

If you want to use the program to make computer based pages (which can be stored digitally or printed out), you can start from scratch or choose from a variety of pre-made template pages (additional templates can be downloaded from the web). These allow you to make very quick pages by just adding your photos and then customising titles, backgrounds, font styles, and page accents (which are also supplied) to complete your page.

In addition to making complete scrapbook pages, the program allows you to produce all the elements you need in a page, (title, accents, journalling box, etc) and then print those elements out, cut them and put them on your page.

Other features include:

  • When you use frames, if you drag and drop the frame on the picture, the frame will automatically resize to fit the picture.
  • Gives button to download additional templates, very easy to do.
  • Saving very easy, but you do end up with large file sizes.
  • Very easy to change the transparency and orientation of clip art images (called props) by flipping or rotating.

The program is fairly intuitive, even someone with little computer experience could produce either simple, classic pages or much more complicated pages quite easily.

In addition to the main program, another very handy piece of software is included on the disk. Called Ulead COOL 360, this program allows you to stitch a number of photos together to produce panoramic shots. For the scrapbooker, this means that you can stitch together the two scans it takes to scan in a 12x12 page.

To do this you:

  1. Choose "New Project" from the main menu (on the right of the screen).
  2. Under "Project Type", choose "Wide Angle Image". (There are examples for each option, so if you forget which one, just try each option til you see the right before and after shot!).
  3. Press, "Next"
  4. From the menu that appears next, find the folder that contains the various images you wish to join together and add them to the bottom screen (by clicking on the file name and then pressing the add button).
  5. TIP: Make sure that the images are in the correct order in the bottom preview window. The order in which they appear here is the order in which they will be joined together.
  6. Press "Next".
  7. Make sure you DO NOT choose the "Disable Blending" option. This is the option that allows the two halves of your 12x12 layout to be "stitched" together without being able to see the seam. To see the difference, compare the two images below.
  8. Press "Finish".
  9. This takes you to the final screen where you can review your stitched layout. If you are satisfied, press the "Finish" button at the top of the screen.
  10. Then save.
