"Cut-out
Kids " by Gina Austin for Design Originals (March, 2002)
This 42 page
book is full of paper doll patterns. Templates for all elements
requried for the pattern are given in the book
The first few
pages of the book are in full colour and show completed examples
of all the dolls in the book. These pages also contain images detailing
how to cut and put together the dolls as well as tips on how to
add movement to your dolls.
The pattern
or template pages are in black and white (one would guess to assist
in tracing). They show all the elements needed to make the pattern
(including the basic paper doll shape needed and a variety of paper
doll bodies in different positions - dancing, jumping etc) but all
give tips where applicable to speed things up (eg if possible you
can use punches for some shapes). The majority of elements are the
correct size but some require enlarging.
Patterns include:
- Mermaid,
Bikini Girl, Swimsuit Boy, Caveboy/Girl
- Soccer kid,
Gymnast, Cheerleader
- Basketball
Boy, Brownie, Scout
- Santa, Elf,
Nutcracker
- Skier, Cowboy,
Flowerpot, Fisherman
- Bride etc,
etc
One criticism
I would have is that the patterns don't give layer instructions
for the dolls, you need to work that out for yourself by looking
at the finished product. Not difficult, but when buying a pattern
instruction book, you expect as much help as possible.
Overall, a very
useful book if you want to make some paper dolls and don't want
to pay large sums for templates or pre-packed designs.
